Getting Health Information No Longer Has to be a Nightmare

By Rick Banas of BMA Management, Ltd.

As the promotional piece from the National Library of Medicine proclaims, “good information is the best medicine for older adults” and “finding trustworthy health information specifically designed for older adults can be a challenge.”

The piece promotes a website that was developed specifically with the needs of older adults in mind. The easy-to-use website features health and wellness information for older adults from the National Institutes for Health. The site is designed to be easy for older adults to navigate, and the information is designed to be easy to read and remember. Buttons are available at the top of each page to make the text bigger, change the color of the text so it is easier for you to read, or hear the text read aloud.

The site was launched by the National Library of Medicine and the National Institute on Aging, both a part of the National Institutes of Health. New information is added on a regular basis.

The featured topic on the day of my visit to the website was Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), which occurs when the arteries that carry blood from your heart to your head, organs and limbs become clogged with plaque.

You can learn about the causes and risk factors of PAD as well as how to diagnosis, prevent, live with and treat the disease.

Three tips for preventing Peripheral Arterial Disease noted on the site are to quit smoking; to make sure you know your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels and work with your doctor to lower them if they are high; and to engage in physical activity for at least 30 minutes every day.

To stay in circulation, it is important to stay in circulation, the site stresses.

The site contains information, stories and videos on more than 75 health care topics, including Medicare Basics for Caregivers, Caring for Someone with Alzheimer’s Disease, and Talking with Your Doctor. Click here to view the video.
