James' Story:Veteran Finds Supportive Living a Perfect Fit

James had been looking for a place to live for a very long time, but could not find housing that was that was suitable and was able to cater to his medical and physical needs. The 65-year-old veteran had multiple family members and case managers searching to find the right fit for him.

James knew he wanted to reside in a place where the people were inviting and would treat him with kindness and love.

His case manager from the VA and his sister, Jewel, reached out to the Montclare at Lawndale, a Gardant-managed affordable assisted living community in Chicago that is certified to operate through the Illinois Supportive Living program. They asked about the community. They asked if the community had great activities; if the community had nursing staff that would assist him; and if the community had comfortable and livable units.

The staff at Montclare at Lawndale confirmed the community had all those things and more. The community had private apartments that featured a kitchenette, spacious bathroom with shower and grab bars, and emergency alert system. Certified nurses aides were on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist residents with activities of daily living and help with medications. Three meals a day plus snacks, housekeeping and laundry services were included.

Residents enjoyed plenty of opportunities to socialize with family, friends, and neighbors and to participate in the scheduled social, recreational, educational, and wellness programs and events.

James applied to be a resident, and a few weeks later his sister, Diane, and her husband came by for a tour. They fell in love. They loved that the community was clean and had nursing staff available. They loved that the staff was kind and that the community had wonderful food options for their brother. You could tell that Jewel, Diane and Diane’s husband had a lot of love for James and wanted to be sure his needs would be met.

They took pictures and talked with James about what would soon be his new home. James was impressed.

When James signed his lease, he received the keys to his apartment. Upon opening the door, James and his families’ eyes lit up. They loved how the apartment was set up and the furniture the community was able to provide.

Staff presented him with a welcoming gift, and James smiled greatly. His sisters smiled as well and thanked the Montclare team for everything.

James says he is happy with his decision to move to Montclare. He continues to thrive in a place that perfectly fits his needs.

Eugene’s Story: Montclare is Home

I moved into the Montclare of Lawndale in the month of Dec 2018, and it has changed my life. The support and services provided here make living here very enjoyable. Having to keep only $90 a month has been a challenge but, I make it work since so many things are taking care of for me here. If I have an issue with something, I let management know and it’s handled. Montclare has not only provided me with a roof over my head, it has provided me  with a safe space I call my own along with a sense of community through social activities and weekly themed activities provided by our Director of Resident Engagement, Vicki. Since we all have had to undergo some life changes due to this pandemic, she has brought numerous activities to our apartments to keep us engaged during this time. I like it when people ask me what has changed your outlook on life?

I said Montclare has!

Catherine’s Story: Sharing Her Love of Crafts

Before moving to Montclare of Lawndale, Catherine was a bus driver for elementary school children.

“I lived with family when someone told me about a brand new community right here in Lawndale, so I came right in and toured. I knew from the first day, this was home.”

“I enjoy living here and getting involved in the different activities available. I truly enjoy the crafting and being able to express myself through painting, and by making things beautiful.” Vicki, the Resident Service Coordinator always makes me feel welcome and supports my creative side.

“You should come in and visit sometime. You will love it.”
