Quentin and his Independence

Quentin moved to John Evans in January of 2024 and immediately began therapy services to improve his mobility, strength, and endurance. Prior to moving here, he struggled with the upkeep of his home, and maintaining his independence was a challenge. Within months, he has achieved all his therapy goals. Now, he is focused on forming new relationships and living life to the fullest. He plans to continue his exercise routine to maintain the gains that he has achieved. “I wasn’t sure I would ever be able to have this kind of independence again. I just love this place.”

Jean and Dee’s Story: John Evans Helps Unlikely Pair Become Friends

Our community brought Jean and Dee together, and now, they are like family.

“There are things that are meant to be” says Jean, and their friendship is one of them.

Jean moved to John Evans last February. Shortly after she arrived, she met Dee, who had lived here only two weeks. The unlikely pair became fast friends.

“We felt God put us together almost as sisters, and a bond was created that we will always have,” Jean says.

Their 20-year age difference made no difference to them. They are kindred spirits, and it’s uncommon to see one lady without the other. When Jean gets up and goes to meals, she looks for Dee before anyone else.

“Dee is a very important part of my life,” said Jean. Her friend feels the same way.

“I would carry her forever if she got tired,” Dee says, expressing her love for her friend.

The women are so happy to have formed this special friendship. They say they feel like they’ve known each other forever, and they are two peas in a pod. They have found someone who they can experience this chapter of their lives.

They are both so happy to have formed a new friendship that feels like one they’ve had forever. They have each other to share new memories and good times with in this chapter of their lives.

Bev’s Story: John Evans Helps Her Through Rough Patch, Now She Helps Others

When Bev came to John Evans in December of 2016, she was going through a difficult time.

While she was on our wait list, her husband had passed away.  Bev was also going through financial difficulties with her home due to her husband’s illness.

Despite Bev’s problems, she has chosen to focus on helping others and bringing positive energy to our community. Bev is a welcoming and compassionate presence for other residents.  Her door is always open to anyone in need of a friendly listener, and she goes out of her way to welcome new residents. She invites them to eat with her in the dining room and introduces them to others.  She understands the challenges of being ‘the new person” and goes out of her way to make the transition easier for others.

Bev’s years as an Avon representative have left her with an abundance of stock that she has given to other residents. She’s also donated beauty products to our bingo cart.

As a welcome addition to the John Evans family, Bev shows her appreciation for our community and is a wonderful example of our values of love and compassion.

Lynn’s Story: Returning Home to Find a Place of Her Own

Moving to John Evans was a homecoming for Lynn.

She had been a Pekinite most of her life. At one point, she moved Arizona to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. While there, she was the victim of financial exploitation, and her son brought her back to Pekin.

Lynn recalls her son wanting her to go to a nursing home, but she refused. She knew she was too active for that type of lifestyle, so she moved into her sister’s basement. She had very little to call her own.

Then, she heard about John Evans from friends and family and decided to come in for a tour. She immediately knew she’d found the perfect place. She loved the apartments and couldn’t wait to move into one of her own.

Our community has helped Lynn find her purpose again. She has regained her independence and loves socializing with other residents. Lynn is also an avid Elvis fan and has several collectibles on display in her apartment. She loves to show them off to her friends and visitors.
