June has been an exciting month at Heritage Woods of Ottawa due to our new project: Reclaiming Our Home! Residents are happy to be able to get up and out of their apartments as often as they wish, with proper social distancing and personal protective measures put in place. Residents have been encouraged to get out of their apartments daily for walking and exercise. Our work-out room is available by appointment for single-use only. This allows for disinfecting and sanitizing after each use. We are also offering fun small-group activities such as bingo, trivia, crafting, and exercise class! Residents sign up prior to event(s) to ensure we meet the requirements of small group. Many residents are also utilitizing the outdoor gazebo and patio areas for reading, phone chats, and enjoying nature.

Overall, the simple aspect of residents being able to socialize with their neighbors and friends again has already improved the atmosphere at Heritage Woods of Ottawa. Socialization can help improve our mental and emotional health. It raises confidence and self-esteem, increases quality of life by reducing blood pressure and risk of developing multiple diseases. Socialization boosts immunity and has many other physical health benefits. It increases brain health and promotes a daily purpose.

Residents are focusing on the positive aspects of Project Reclaiming Our Home and are excited about what the future will bring. Staff is remaining vigilant in our dedication to our residents and their families. We will continue to strive for a safe and healthy environment for residents and employees as well as everyone in our community. We are all proud to be a part of this undoubtedly important project!
