Gail Wilcox's Story

From Gail Wilcox’s daughter, Cheryl Dempsey:

Resident Gail Ranke Wilcox, age 87, was born and raised in Grove City on Haughn Rd.  She is the eldest of 7 children.

After high school graduation at age 18 years old, she took the train each day from Grove City to the Dayton State Hospital to learn EEG.  Gail became a certified EEG Technician there and stayed in the field for 40 years.  She retired from the Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital and worked another 10 years at the Franklin Correctional Center doing EEGs as needed on the prisoners.

Gail’s earliest memory of becoming a passionate gardener started when her and her husband purchased their first house in 1961.  She started with a few flowers as money would allow.  When she retired from COPH in 2000, she really went full steam ahead and planted flowers everywhere possible, including in containers.  Her house on Dixie Ct was notably the most beautiful on the street.

After retirement, her and her husband Charles bought a park model in Ft. Myers Beach Fl and she took her passion there as well.  She even grew a Pineapple!  She has traveled Europe and all over the United States.  She found inspiration in the beautiful gardens she admired in her travels as well.

We, the children of Gail, are confident that Carriage Court, will have Gail Inspired gardens blooming all over the grounds!

From Carriage Court of Grove City’s Executive Director, Dennis Downing:

Since her arrival at Carriage Court, Gail has be seen working diligently in the courtyard outside of both her apartment, and the Activities area. Pausing only for meals and the occasional break, Gail works tirelessly with the energy of a 20-year old. Alas, as seen in the picture, her efforts are paying off! The flowers are in, the weeds are out, and the smiles are wide! She claims there is still much to do, and we are all beneficiaries of her deeds!

Arnie’s Story: From Rags to Riches

Meet Arnie, a lifelong resident of a small rural community outside of Danville.

Often seen in the local grocery store or having a hamburger at his favorite curb-service restaurant, many people would say they knew Arnie and almost expected to see him every week.  What they didn’t know is that over the years, it had become harder and harder for Arnie to tackle the repairs and maintenance that were needed for his home.  He was finding it difficult to tackle everyday living activities, and the home had fallen into quite a state of disrepair.

Never married and without any children, Arnie was mostly on his own. A nephew who lived out of town but kept in touch with Arnie knew that his uncle needed help. His uncle needed somewhere to spend his senior years comfortably, so he reached out to Bowman Estates of Danville. Administrator Terry LaBounty and Business Office Manager Kim Dunbar worked with them via email to complete the application, and knowing that Arnie did not have help nearby, they even helped him move.

Arnie brought his beloved truck with him, and once in a while on nice days, he still makes the trip to have a hamburger at his favorite diner.  On one recent trip, our administrator went along and was able to see how happy people were to see Arnie.

“It was like having lunch with a local celebrity,” laughed Terry.

When you ask Arnie about his new home at Bowman Estates, he sums it up nicely, “I like it here. It’s real nice.  It’s like coming from rags to riches.”

We are so glad that Arnie’s family reached out to us to learn about the Supportive Living Program and how it helps us serve our residents. We are looking forward to Arnie being a part of our community for many years to come!

Betty’s Story: Regaining Her Independence

Everyone knows Betty. Her smiling face was the one greeting patrons at McDonald’s for more than 25 years.

It was only when it became increasingly hard for her to stand and do her job that she decided to retire.

A few years into retirement, Betty’s health continued to decline. She suddenly found herself unable to walk or keep up with day-to-day activities in her home. What started as just a possible hospital stay became a transition to a skilled nursing facility.

Days turned to months, and months turned to years, and her independence slowly slipped away.

Even as friendly as Betty is – having a roommate was often a challenge.  She missed her privacy.  Betty finally realized that a nursing home was not the right place for her. She didn’t have to be there. She owed it to herself to regain the independence she’d enjoyed before. So, she reached out to the facility’s social worker and said, “What do I have to do to get out of here?” That’s where Bowman Estates came into the picture.

“When I met Betty, I immediately knew she would be a great fit for Bowman Estates” said Melissa Taylor, our Director of Marketing.

“Betty’s spirit is so strong, and she just seemed to be someone who would really benefit from taking back her independence.  I knew she was ready to regain the dignity of having her own place to call home.”

Since coming to Bowman Estates, Betty has learned to navigate her new motorized scooter, which makes her trips through the building much easier. She says she really enjoys the view from her new apartment, and we are looking forward to this holiday season when she will be able to enjoy all the lights that are placed right in the area she overlooks.

Now that she is settled into our community, Betty is her old self again.

After years of giving friendly greetings to her customers, it’s not uncommon now to hear Betty giving friendly hellos in our dining room as she comes and goes.

We are so thankful to have Betty here with us as part of our Bowman Estates family!
