Lessons for Living Longer + Brain Fitness

By Rick Banas, Vice President of Strategic Marketing

One the guests that we were honored to have on the Nov. 1 edition of the radio “House Calls” show that senior living provider BMA Management, Ltd., sponsors was the author of “Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People who Lived the Longest.”

In researching the book, author Dan Buettner partnered with National Geographic and the National Institute on Aging. He spent five years visiting areas of the world where people tend to longer and healthier lives.

One the fascinating people that he had the opportunity to meet was a 104-year-old man who started his day with a glass of wine and was out chopping wood by 9 a.m. The man dared Buettner to arm wrestle. Buettner, who is a world record-holding cyclist, lost.

Among the tips cited by Buettner for living longer and healthier lives are the following:

  • Create an environment that encourages physical activity. De-convenience your house and your life. Have a house full of manual implements. The average American burns less than 100 calories per day through exercise.
  • Watch what you eat. Eat more plants and grains. Never diet. The long term success of dieting is less than 5%.

Buettner also cited the potential value of eating nuts. His research shows that for some reason people who eat nuts – about a handful a day four or five times a week – tend to live longer.

Buettner will be speaking on “Blue Zones: The Secrets of a Long Life” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. For more information, you can go to http://www.msichicago.org/whats-here/events/members-feature-lecture-with-dan-buettner/

The “House Calls” radio show on Nov. 1 also focused on the importance of brain fitness and an innovative computerized brain fitness brain that has been incorporated into the wellness program at an assisted living community that BMA manages in Huntley, Illinois.

Dan Michel, founder of Dakim Brain Fitness, and Susan Schhttps://www.gardant.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/COVID-19-1.jpgfer, Administrator of the Heritage Woods of Huntley assisted living community, were guest on the show.
