A Recipe for a Souper Thanksgiving

By Rick Banas, Vice President of Strategic Marketing

What started as a lark has grown into a Thanksgiving Tradition.

About a dozen years ago, the in-laws from Wisconsin were coming down to our house, and I spotted a recipe for a Thanksgiving Pumpkin Soup in the Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine.  What better way to impress them, I thought, then by adding a soup that I made from scratch to the menu.

This year, we will be heading up to their neck of the woods to celebrate, and I was asked to continue the yearly tradition.  I’ll be making a creamy carrot and sweet potato soup that I saw in yesterday’s USA Today.

My sister-in-law, who called my wife to tell her what I was to bring, noted that serving the soup gives us the time to settle down and reflect before everyone plows into the turkey and fixins.

This year, there are so many reasons to give thanks.

I can’t help but remember the woman in her 80s who I met last week a few hours before the ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of our affordable assisted living community in Dwight, Illinois.  She will be moving into the community later this month, but was so anxious to see what it looked like that she just had to stop in with her daughter, son-in-law and one of her granddaughters.  Tears welled up in her eyes as she told me how beautiful everything was and how much she appreciated all of the “little touches” that were everywhere.

I so appreciate having a job and being with a company that can make difference in the lives of so many.

I also am so thankful for  . . .

  • My wife and I having the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica for the first time to visit our oldest daughter who moved down there to work for Habitat for Humanity.
  • Being able to play a small part in pulling off a surprise party for my wife and her twin sister to celebrate their 60th Birthdays.
  • Being able to join so many friends and relatives at the Halloween Costume Party at my Mom’s to celebrate her and my Dad moving into the house with us on Halloween 50 years ago.

From all of us at BMA Management, may you and your family enjoy a very blessed and happy Thanksgiving.

We invite you to share your reasons for being thankful and your favorite traditions.
